SERVICES AND
SOLUTIONS FOR
AT-RISK YOUTH
AND THEIR FAMILIES

Crime, crime victims, hunger, addiction, mental illness and homelessness are just a few of the desperate circumstances that the team from Helping Families encountered in the first year of operation.

With unprecedented teamwork, among all the partners and the entire community, Helping Families members worked to cut red tape and offer services and solutions to at-risk youth and their families early enough to intervene effectively. Examples include:

  • A teenage girl — on the verge of a life of drug abuse and sexual exploitation — was provided safety in a group home.
  • Four abused and neglected children were rescued from a crack house and began a more normal life with foster parents.
  • A 4th-grader overturned school furniture in a rage, threatened to kill faculty and students, stood on top of his desk and screamed at the teacher. At home, he blackened his frail grandmother’s eye and is suspected of setting fires and torturing animals. The boy was placed in safekeeping until his medications were corrected. Under professional supervision, his behavior improved.
  • A mom and dad “at their wit’s end” with their teenaged daughter got help with the child’s addiction — problems they were unaware of until Helping Families intervened.
  • A wide range of family assistance services helped the troubled families of several middle school girls discovered to be engaging in ritual self-mutilation.
  • A high school student destined to dropout got the support and encouragement he needed to finish high school and enroll in community college. [1]
